Retipping phono cartridges seems to be even more popular today than when I published a list of retippers several years ago. It may be that the cost of better moving coil cartridges has gotten astronomical, that some great cartridges are no longer made or that enthusiasts are generally more value conscious even at the pricier end of the spectrum. I’ve always thought there was value in retipping, as long as it doesn’t alter the fundamental character of the cartridge.

This outfit, which wrote to me, does inspections, claims quick turn around time, and has a dedicated process for Denon 103 upgrades. (Long time readers will know that I use one such Franken-Denon in my vintage system sourced from VAS in New Jersey).
Another outfit, in Australia, has been engaged in some instructive commentary on the Hoffman site:

At some point, we’ll revisit the subject and I’ll revise the list to update it. In the meantime, keep track of your playing hours, don’t assume the styli last forever and –perhaps– find a back up cartridge you can live with while yours is off for surgery.
